Comments from Mrs Cole

Joe,

You have some interesting research here. You need to begin to formulate a question that you want to address so that you can direct your research more closely. It would also be interesting to keep a record on your blog of news reports you find about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and begin to analyse the language used. Compare the same story in different newspapers and see how the 'terrorists' and 'soldiers' are described as the use of emotive language is very powerful. Comparing the Daily Mail to the Guardian would be interesting and then see how the medialens website reports the same story, because it tries to be unbiased (you will need to decide whether or not it successfully manages this!)

Are you planning on focusing on British news broadcasts or are you also going to look at the way the war has been presented to the American public? This could prove to be a lot of work, but might show some interesting cultural comparisons.

Make certain you have examples of news stories that you can put into your essay - particularly if you find any powerful images which have been used in different ways to tell a story.
